At the end of 2008, things seemed to have gone tits-up for jaunty Danish band Alphabeat – they parted ways with EMI despite scoring a top 10 hit with their debut album, and appeared to have been consigned to pop’s great scrapheap. Well thankfully they resigned with Polydor, and their first single with the label deserves to be an absolute smash. ‘The Spell’ is a heady rush which recalls Ace of Base at their peak, had Ace of Base been a bit more uptempo. It’s really, really good. Well done Alphabeat.

      They’ve kept the ‘Happy Pop’ but added an electro-pop feel, which is where it is really at now – Little Boots, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga and even Dizzee. Its going top 3 at least, but I fortell their first number 1.

      I love it! Can’t believe they used the beat from Cut n Move’s “get serious” :-) It’s going to go number one in Denmark for sure, but I think it’s going to be a big international hit too.

      This song is fab, it makes me really happy and reminds me of growing up! It has that early 90s sound but is also really current. Love it!
