What a good topic to start on.. What has happened to the charts? Do they really matter anymore? With single sales on the decline what should be done to re-ignite the spark the charts used to have..

Personally I think the 'so and so feat so and so' should tail off and camp pop should retake its rightful place as the ruler.. But that's just my opinion..

    What's yours?

Back in the mists of time I would hear a song and have a pretty good guess whether it would be a hit (possibly a slight exaggeration...). Now I hear a song like Do it in the AM by Frankmusik and think its going to be a massive hit and it does nothing. I've lost touch! Seems to me that there is a certain production (eg Tulisa), song structure, with an urban twist that dominates singles charts - obviously with exceptions. I think this is driven by the fact that song rotations on radio are generally becoming more and more rigid. Same song is often played twice in 2 hours on Kiss or Capital. They are so focussed on keeping a v young audience that anything "old" - even Madonna Girl gone Bad which has exactly the "right" production - like, say, Be With You by Erasure, don't get played. Radio 1 is just talking and "fashionable" shit so doesn't lead the charge like it used to.

There is no one singles chart like there used to be. On music TV they all have their own charts often including "hot" pre-releases. itunes - which is prob dominant chart - includes album tracks not officially released as singles. They need a proper singles chart where only tracks which have been officially released as singles can be included. We need a Top of the Pops back - which could be shown multi-media so those unused to TV ("kidz") can watch. Older people need to start buying music - many have become put off by technology. Boffins need to do better at stopping illegal downloads.

The plus side to itunes is that in theory it should crack down on "filler". If they want to sell an album it better all be good. Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce haven't heard about this yet.

I agree that camp pop, disco and hi-nrg should rule the air again but I fear it won't happen. Boo hoo!!!

I love that song, it's very 'Cher', but it felt totally out of place in the movie.

On the charts thing, it's a weird one. It's nice that old songs can make a reappearance on the (iTunes) charts, but they do seem to be taken over by TV formats like the music contests (The Voice, X Factor) and shows like Glee. They take away from the new-ness in the charts.

Then again, I find this model of premiering a song and releasing it (to purchase) two months later pretty annoying. You want to buy the song when it comes out and it makes the charts feel like old news and not that relevant. The American charts are a lot more dynamic as they do simultaneously release the song and include air play and streaming.

With Steps looking likely to sign a new album deal sooner rather than later, I don't think it will be long before camp pop hits our charts, then there is the Sclub reunion.. Kylie's new stuff for next year.. Take That at the end of 2013.. Looks set to be a pop filled year.. Yahooooo..

Well, it's not a complete overhaul fo the charts, but the Official Charts Company are to launch the UK’s first official streaming chart. It's a chart on its own.

The first Official Streaming Top 100 will be unveiled at 1pm on Monday 14th May 2012 at OfficialCharts.com. It will also be published weekly in music industry business title Music Week and feature on the streaming services contributing to the chart each week.

The charts is compiled from information contributed by a range of services including Spotify, We7, Napster, Deezer, Zune (X Box Live) and ChartsNow.

year, the actual revenues to the music industry only made up a small 4.5% of of total revenues.

Personally I stopped truly caring about UK charts in the mid to late '90s - showing my age here - when multi-formatting resulted in crazy peaks and dizzying lows. Even at 16, when I Worked in a record shop (remember them?) I thought that shit was crazy. When labels could more easily influence a top 5 placing by releasing 2 CDS and a 7 inch vinyl at 99p per purchase (maybe a cassingle as well!)

Now that 2xCD sets have been replaced with downloads, things are arguably a bit more democratic - if people like something, they'll download it for 59p, 79p, 99p etc. (The price issue is a separate debate, but when has music ever been fairly priced...)

What I dislike now is this new era where people release several different videos and tracks all at once (See Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Gaga, Taylor Swift and many more) just to see what sticks. I totally loathe the terms 'buzz track' and 'promo single' - what does any of that mean? And why make a posh video for something that allegedly isn't a 'real' single?

Zab Braff just posted... "I wish Gotye's girlfriend had never screwed him over. I'm tired of hearing about it."

I kind of agree with him - although it is a good song every time that video comes on to the TV or online I have to switch over. However, in his defence Gotye is one of many few independent artists to break on such a huge scale - and respect to him.

I think that the charts are so manipulated by the 'major labels' with TV, radio and online PR that people are brainwashed in to buying what they think they should like.
