Damsel in distress: Ciara releases yet another below-average single 'Never Ever'
REVIEWS
Sunday, 04 January 2009
The so-called princess of crunk is quickly starting to look like a damsel in distress. While the much delayed 3-disc concept album ‘Fantasy Ride’ sounded like an interesting idea, initial buzz track ‘Go Girl’ was anything but impressive and failed to make an impact on the charts. Ciara’s official new (lead) single ‘Never Ever’ adopts a different approach by embracing a radio-friendly sound.

The song samples Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes’ ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now’ – yep, the same one Simply Red had a mega-hit with.
Whether ‘Never Ever’ can get Ciara back in Billboard’s good books remains to be seen. Unfortunately, the WAPS verdict is not good – to our ears this bland semi-ballad sounds like little more than a Brandy cast-off.

What do you make of Ciara's latest single?

Someone clearly had too much time on their hands, but this piece of ‘clever’ video editing is very funny indeed. Here's Nigella describing her Christmas treats with rather more sauce than usual.

Tis the time to make lists, and DJ Earworm has created a monster mash up of the top 25 (Billboard) hits of the year. It might not be the most radio friendly piece of music, but give it a try and see how many you can pick up.

Beyonce premiers two new videos: Halo and Diva
VIDEOS
Tuesday, 23 December 2008
Continuing her schizophrenic release schedule, Beyonce premiered two new videos: ‘Diva’ and ‘Halo’, the latter being the best song on the whole album.

In ‘Halo’, we see Beyonce play around with lots of light concepts (see what they did there?) and actor Michael Ealy who plays her love interest. It’s a simple video, but it works for this song.

When we first heard ‘Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It), we weren’t loving it. The video, however made us change our minds. It was fun, especially all the YouTube responses (1, 2, 3). ‘Diva’, another ‘Sasha’ song, is one of the most annoying songs on the album (sharing that honour with ‘Video Phone’), however this time around the video fails to turn this into anything remotely interesting.

Bring on ‘Radio’ and ‘Sweet Dreams’. Which are your favourite tracks of Beyonce’s ‘I Am…Sasha Fierce’ album?

Toni Braxton: Get Loose (new song)
REVIEWS
Tuesday, 23 December 2008
It looks like Toni Braxton’s comeback is shifting up a gear. New song ‘Get Loose’, rumoured to be the first single from her new album, has surfaced today. The upbeat Darkchild produced song, takes some cues from Brandy’s ‘Right Here (Departed)’, but shows a poppy side to Toni not seen since her 1999 ‘The Heat’ album.

With the rumoured writing team to include Darkchild, The Writing Camp, Claude Kelly and RedOne, Toni’s comeback could very well turn out to be more commercially focused and embracing pop(ier) sounds. Yay!

Girls Aloud absolutely murder 'The Loving Kind'
VIDEOS
Saturday, 20 December 2008
DISCLAIMER:
We adore Girls Aloud but this had to be mentioned. Apologies for being a bit behind the times, but Girls Aloud performed the (usually) gorgeous 'The Loving Kind' on GMTV the other day – and by god did they cock it up.

From the word go it was all over the place – and we do understand that singing live on breakfast telly at 8am (meaning a 5am start) is not easy - but nothing can excuse Sarah's wrong note at 03.50. Utterly hilarious!  You won't believe your ears.

We love Sarah. At least she has the best hair. To be fair to Sarah though, the entire group is all over the place in this performance. Listen out for Cheryl's bum-notes throughout and Kimberley totally missing her cue. Maybe they'd been on the piss the night before?

Are we being too harsh? Or not harsh enough, perhaps…
