After the annual December announcement of the BBC’s ‘Sound Of…’ long-list, it was revealed this morning that Haim have nabbed the top spot. The Californian sisters have been causing a stir for some time now with their Fleetwood Mac-esque folk-rock and 90s R&B influences.
Haim released their debut EP, ‘Forever‘, in early 2012, followed by ‘Don’t Save Me‘ in November, as well as opening on Florence + the Machine’s UK and Ireland tour in December. A debut album is expected soon.

Runner up duo AlunaGeorge are Aluna Francis (vocals) and George Reid (production). Their soulful electronic music also saw them shortlisted for the 2013 Critics’ Choice BRIT Award.

Angel Haze is a female rapper from Michigan who managed to hit the headlines yesterday with her diss track ‘On The Edge’ about fellow MC Azealia Banks. The two fell out on Twitter after Banks said that people who are not from New York should not claim to be from the city (yawn).

London songstress Arlissa made her debut with the Nas collaboration ‘Hard To Love Somebody’. She also performed ‘Sticks & Stones’ for the New Year’s Eve edition of Top of The Pops:

If the Beeb’s poll is accurate, 2013 will hopefully see generic club-pop giving way to a new breed of creative yet accessible pop.
