France has produced its fair share of brilliant pop acts, though few are well-known outside of francophone countries. So without further ado, here is an overview of the latest pop music from France: It’s Pop Atlas France!

Mylène in 'Oui mais... non'

With over 25 million records sold and a track record of ten number 1 singles, Mylène Farmer is undoubtedly the queen of French pop. The 49-year-old singer/songwriter has often been compared to Madonna for her provocative videos and eleborate stage shows, while latest album Bleu Noir (out 6th December 2010) sees Farmer teaming up with Moby, Archives and Lady GaGa producer RedOne.

We’re loving the ‘Bad Romance’-vibe of her latest single ‘Oui mais… non‘ (which translates as ‘Yes but… no’):

And here are some other French pop stars and bands you might like to check out.

  • Electro band Yelle broke through with Je Te Veux back in 2006. They’re currently finishing their second album ‘Safari Disco Club’, which is set to be released early March 2011. The first single off the album is ‘La Musique‘ which was released back in October.
  • Jenifer is a product of the French talent show Star Academy. She won the show back in 2001 and has since released 4 studio albums. Her latest album ‘Appelle-moi Jen’ (‘Call me Jen’) is a light electropop album and was preceded by the single ‘Je Danse‘.
  • David Guetta doesn’t really need introducing. After a succesful DJ career in the 80s, 90s and noughties, these days Guetta produces hits for the likes of Rihanna, Kelly Rowland and Kelis.
  • Martin Solveig is another DJ with a string of dance hits over the past 2 decades. His latest two singles, ‘Boys & Girls‘ (featuring a cameo from Jean Paul Gautier) and ‘Hello‘ feature Canadian band Dragonette on vocals.
  • Alizée was discovered and mentored by Mylène Farmer, following her winning performance in the talent show Graines de Star. She recorded two albums with Mylène Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat. Her latest album ‘Une Enfant Du Siècle‘ is a more grown up electro affair and came out earlier in the year.
  • Daft Punk – the legendary electro duo who rarely show their faces – have recently completed the soundtrack for Disney’s Tron reboot. We’re not entirely convinced by the album, but we’re yet to hear it in conjunction with the movie.

Check out the other countries covered in Pop Atlas (Netherlands, Japan and Sweden). And on that note, à bientôt.
