WAPS Interviews James Morrison

James Morrison

James Morrison

We went to see Girls Aloud last week – hooray! – and were struck by how great their cover of James Morrison‘s ‘Broken Strings’ sounded.

Duly-inspired, we sat down for a quick chat with Mr Morrison ahead of his latest US single release, ‘Precious Love‘, which has just gone to radio ‘over the pond’.

Morrison also recently completed a successful stateside tour with the lovely Adele, so with all these pop ladies knocking on his door you won’t be surprised to hear about his interest in La Roux, Noisettes and Ting Tings

WAPS: You recently worked with Girls Aloud and Nelly Furtado – who from the world of pop would you like to hear covering one of your songs, and why? (You can’t say Girls Aloud or Nelly Furtado!)

JM: I sang with Keisha (Buchanan, from Sugababes – the pair sang ‘Broken Strings’ together at this year’s Children In Need) and she was cool. I do like the Sugababes, they sing fucking great pop songs!

WAPS: Yes they do, James – just be wary of the never-ending battle between Girls Aloud and Sugababes fans, it’s a terrifying thing. Anyway – you’ve mentioned an appreciation for artists such as Van Morrison, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding etc. What modern artists influence you / will influence your next album?

JM: I’m into artists like Citizen Cope, Ray Lamontagne, Natty, Kings of Leon… I like Noisettes, Ting Tings have got some good tracks [as well]…I love that track by La Roux, ‘In For The Kill‘. Anything that just sounds fresh, you know?

WAPS: Good choices. ‘In For The Kill’ is just massive right now, isn’t it? Let’s move on to your time in America.  You’re on the long promo-slog over there – what experiences will keep you sane / are you looking forward to the most?

JM: I think just getting time to go out and enjoy myself with friends is good enough. This tour has been a real endurance test [though]. We’ve been rolling straight away [from gigs] sometimes and doing a lot of soundcheck parties, so a lot of the time your free time gets more and more compressed to the point where you are just being ‘James Morrison’  all the time. I always look forward to the feeling of satisfaction when you finish a show that you’re proud of, with a band that kick ass and a crowd that are happy. It sounds cheesy, but if you can make a room full of strangers happy that’s gotta be a good thing.

WAPS: Out of interest, how did the Nelly Furtado duet come about on ‘Broken Strings‘?

JM: I tied her up and sang ‘I’m Like A Bird’ over and over and over until she gave in!

WAPS: We tried that once but it just ended in a court case. So what we really want to know is, how much did you party with Adele on your joint US tour?

JM: Shit loads! That girl can party alright. Every day we woke up pissed.

WAPS: Sounds like our kind of girl. Thanks for your time, James!

James Morrison’s second album, ‘Songs For You, Truths For Me‘ is out now and is available TODAY (June 3rd) for just $1.99 at Go and get it!

Finally, don’t forget to check out James Morrison’s tour dates on MySpace. Cheerio!
